Leader of one of the most popular
orchestras in New York during the
1920s, Fletcher Henderson was born
today in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1897.
His band was where many latter day
jazz stars got their start including Don
Redman and Coleman Hawkins. In
1924 he hired Louis Armstrong, a gig
that essentially introduced the young
horn player to the world.
Courteously provided by our friends at
20sJazz.com is a Henderson 78 rpm
record featuring Armstrong and the rest.
