JEFF BECK, FOR THE RECORD

El lunes pasado, último día de noviembre,
al caer la tarde, a eso de las ocho,
había retomado recién la delirante lectura
de 'La Sinagoga de los Iconoclastas' de J. R. Wilcock
cuando me llama Carlos Vergara para invitarme
(gentileza de Alejandro 'Caco' Lyon,
hermano de Andrés) al concierto
de Jeff Beck en el teatro Caupolicán
que comenzaba en una hora...
 
Para los que no lo conozcan
o sepan poco acerca de esta leyenda británica
de la música, contemporáneo de una generación
extraordinaria de guitarristas como Eric Clapton,
Keith Richards, Peter Townshend, Jimmy Page,
George Harrison, ... Jeff Beck es uno de los
mejores, fino y original en un grupo ya selecto;
alterna un gran lirismo haciendo que su Stratocaster blanca
suene como una seda (pulsa las cuerdas,
no utiliza uñeta) y otras veces imprime
gran fuerza y ritmo a los temas que forman su repertorio.
 
La impronta rítmica del tema Superstition de Stevie Wonder
es contribución de Jeff Beck...
 
Fuera del grueso de temas propios,
incluyó en el concierto magníficas versiones
de 'Somewhere over the rainbow' (del Mago de Oz),
y de 'A Day in the Life' the Sargent Pepper's entre otros...
....
 
 In October 1974 Beck began to record instrumentals at AIR Studios.
During these sessions he worked with keyboard player Max Middleton,
bassist Phil Chen and drummer Richard Bailey,
using George Martin as producer and strings arranger.
 
Blow by Blow (March 1975) evolved from these sessions
and showcased Beck's technical prowess in jazz-rock.
 
The album reached number four in the charts
and is Beck's most commercially successful release.entr
 
Beck was fastidious about overdubs
and was often dissatisfied with his solos
and returned to AIR Studios to record his performances
until he was satisfied that he had performed his best.
 
A couple of months after the sessions had finished
Martin received a telephone call from Beck,
who wanted to record a solo section again.
 
Bemused, Martin replied:
"I'm sorry, Jeff, but the record is in the shops!"
